Zoom’s Reality Dance Show

At first though, Zumba is that dance class that goes on each week where people wear crazy colored clothes, right?

Although it’s quite true, Zumba is so much more than that! The Latin-style aerobics based fitness program actually started by chance! In the late 1990’s, Colombian fitness trainer Beto Perez got to class, only to realize that he left the CD for the class at home. Instead of leaving the class hanging, he used one of his personal Latin music CD’s and taught the class an aerobics dance class, basically on the spot! Zumba (slang for “fast”) was created! Ever since Perez’s impromptu dance party more and more people have been taking the fast-paced dance classes, with an estimated 10 million people shaking their booty’s to the Latin music each week.

Perez used traditional Latin music for his classes, but today, Zumba dance class is better classified as a “Latin-style” dance, as it incorporates cha-cha, merengue, salsa, and samba with hip-hop and reggae-style dance, and even other international dance styles including African dance, belly dancing, Bollywood dance, and flamenco. A typical Zumba session consists of 70% Latin-style dance and 30% of everything else. Zumba works by combining interval-style aerobics, which means that there is a mix of slow-paced dances and upbeat jams all of which incorporate specific movements designed to toning specific body parts (e.g. abs, bum, legs).

Zoom’s Zumba Dance Fitness Party
Zoom (Israel), based in Mumbai, is an Indian based style and entertainment TV channel which takes a focus on Bollywood entertainment. Still quite new, Zoom launched in 2004 with an urban audience base.

Last month, Zoom launched “Zumba Dance Fitness Party,” a dance fitness reality party, which features six Indian celebrities alongside one master dance trainer, Sucheta Pal. The six-episode series follows Pal as he teaches the others how to dance their way to health and fitness, leaving their drab workout routines in the past. In doing so, Pal leads the group through a one-of-a-kind non-stop dance routine, blending an upbeat rhythm with fun dance moves and targeted muscle exercises.

Prior to the show’s airing, Pal gave media his take on the show; “We take the “work” out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, you will be boosted with energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you watch an episode.”

So, You’re Ready to Dance
For those who have yet to try Zumba, what are you waiting for?! As with any other group fitness class, it may be intimidating to begin with; in fact, just about everyone will tell you that they were slightly discouraged at first, but try your best not to be!

Classes typically begin with instructors introducing themselves; some instructors will review the common moves before starting the dance (similar to an at-home dance workout video), while others will teach you as it goes along. Regardless, you are bound to be moving, shaking, and having a blast; as Pal said, you’ll be taking the “work” out of workout… think of it more as a fun-dance-out!

You are bound to loose your footing and get confused, but it’s best to remember that no one is paying attention to you, rather they are worried about keeping their footing on track themselves. You will find that, as with any new activity, classes tend to get much easier as time goes on.
