12 On-the-Go Skincare Tricks

Taking care of your skin when you’re on the move can be tricky, especially if you do not have your usual arsenal of beauty products with you. To ensure that you are able to maintain that healthy glow, take a look at these 12 on-the-go skin care tricks and tips.

woman using oil blotting sheet

Oily skin can be really difficult to control while on the move, but blotting sheets are often a great solution.

Never used them before?

Simply press a sheet against any shiny areas of your face, beginning with your T-zone, which refers to your forehead, nose and chin. Keep this sheet against your skin for a few seconds, as this gives it the chance to absorb any excess oil, but make sure that you do not rub it against your face.

Once you are done, pull it away from your face, and then use another paper for a different part of your face if necessary.

Wondering if you can use a sheet a few times?

Yes, but only the clean parts of each sheet. You will know if a part has oil on it, as the sheet will turn almost transparent. Once this happens, definitely do not apply this part of the sheet back onto your face.

For an added skin boost, try looking for oil blotting papers that contain one of these skin-soothing ingredients:

  • Lavender
  • Green tea
  • Chamomile
  • Hemp

woman spritzing on hydrating mist

Travelling can really dry out the skin, but a hydrating mist is the perfect way to give your skin a quick pick-me-up throughout the day.

A mineral water mist is all that you really need, but be sure to follow this up immediately with a layer of moisturizer.

If you don’t, the air around you will only end up pulling that extra moisture from your face, quickly leaving it dry again. The moisturizer will form a film over the surface of your skin, trapping the moisture from the mist within.

Want to use something a bit more special than mineral water?

Here are a few ingredient ideas to experiment with when creating your own hydrating mist:

  • Rose water
  • Coconut water
  • Aloe vera
  • Essential oils
  • Witch hazel
  • Green tea, or any other herbal tea

Of course, you can also just purchase a pre-made hydrating mist, which will already be packed with a range of antioxidants.

woman spraying sunscreen onto her arm

Not only does the sun cause everything from premature wrinkles to dehydration, but it also leads to skin cancer. This makes sunscreen absolutely essential, although there is no denying that applying sunscreen can be a bit of a pain when you are on-the-go.

Fortunately, there is an easy fix…

This is in the form of a spray-on sunscreen. These can be spritzed onto the skin whenever you need another application, and will cover your skin quite lightly, meaning that they will not affect your makeup. To make this even better, travel-sized spray-on sunscreens are also available, so you can always have one with you in your bag.

Wondering whether a spray-on sunscreen is as effective as a standard lotion formula?

Yes, but, just like with any sunscreen, it all depends on how you use it. You need to ensure that all areas of exposed skin have been covered with sunscreen, and this can sometimes be easier with a lotion, as you can visibly see where you have already applied it.

Do not forget that you need to re-apply your sunscreen every two to three hours, as well as whenever your skin has become wet, whether this may be through swimming, a shower, or even just sweating.

woman applying foundation/tinted moisturizer

While you may like to travel with a full face of makeup on, this is not going to do your skin any favors.

Instead, try swapping your foundation for a tinted moisturizer. This basically does the same thing as a foundation, although the moisturizers do carry slightly less pigment.

However, a tinted moisturizer will usually have a much higher humectant content than a foundation, which means that it will keep your skin far more hydrated

Wondering what a humectant is?

These are ingredients that draw in water from the air, attracting them to your skin, and therefore keeping your skin hydrated. As you can imagine, this is especially helpful while travelling, since you are likely to encounter dry air quite a bit.

If you have never used a tinted moisturizer before, here are a few tips to help you to get the most out of the product:

  • When choosing a shade, color match the moisturizer to your jaw line, as well as around your shoulders. This will ensure that it matches both your face as well as your body.
  • The SPF in your tinted moisturizer will probably not be strong enough to provide sufficient sun protection, so you will likely still need to use a sunscreen on top
  • When blending your moisturizer into your skin, move your hands upwards and outwards, but downwards when it comes to your neck
  • If you need some extra coverage, apply some concealer over your moisturizer, rather than under
  • A face mist underneath a tinted moisturizer will give your skin an extra glow

woman using lip balm

The lips are often neglected when it comes to skin care, but the skin here can really suffer while you are on-the-go.

The best way to deal with this is by liberally applying a medicated lip balm throughout the day. This will help to keep your lips consistently hydrated, without ruining your lipstick.

However, if possible, try to avoid using a lipstick while travelling. A tinted lip balm will be much more hydrating, and can be mixed in with your medicated lip balm.

antibacterial hand gel

When you are on-the-go, your hands will come into contact with so many different surfaces, whether this may be door handles, restaurant tables or public seats. Each surface will be home to so many different germs and types of bacteria, all of which move on to your hands each time you touch them.

Of course, these are then transferred onto your face when your hands touch your face.

Since completely resisting the urge to touch your face is near-impossible, try to always carry a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you.

Use this throughout the day, so that you know your hands will be relatively clean whenever you accidentally touch your face.

However, keep in mind that these hand gels do often contain quite a high alcohol content.

What does this mean for your skin?

Well, for a start, it can really dry your skin out, especially if you are using the gel quite frequently. To prevent this from happening, always follow up your hand gel with a layer of moisturizer.

woman with face mask

Whether you have a long-haul flight ahead of you, or a few hours on a train, there is no reason to let this time go to waste. Rather than letting the recycled air around you wreak havoc on your skin, carry a face mask with you and apply this once you have begun your journey.

Don’t want other people to see you with a face mask on?

Then opt for a clear mask, which will not be noticeable at all.

When it comes to clearing the mask off, you can simply use a cleansing wipe, and then wash your face properly once you reach your destination.

woman applying ice cube on eyes

Whether you are setting off on a long journey or are halfway through a hectic day, stress and tiredness can often make themselves visible in the form of puffy eyes.

Keeping your eye cream in a fridge or a cooler before applying it is one of the best ways to deal with this, but this is not usually an option that you will have when on-the-go.

Instead, try to find a cool spoon, and hold the rounded side of this against your eyes for a few minutes. This will quickly de-puff your eyes, and make them look and feel more refreshed and revitalized.

Don’t have access to a spoon that is cold enough?

Try using some ice cubes instead, and wrap these in a thin cloth, before holding them against your eyes.

If you know that your eyes do tend to puff up when you are on-the-go, then it would be wise to prepare for this in advance by looking for a travel-sized version of your favorite eye cream.

woman having a healthy snack outdoors

No matter the reason you are on-the-go, you will no doubt end up feeling peckish at different points throughout the day.

At times like these, many people tend to turn to convenient, but extremely unhealthy, processed foods, forgetting that they do not have their acne products with them when a breakout quickly occurs from all the sugar.

By packing healthy snacks for yourself, you will be able to resist the urge to reach for unhealthy foods, and will also be able to select ingredients that will give your skin an extra boost while you are on the mood.

Wondering what snacks to pack?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Fresh or dried fruit
  • Almonds and other nuts
  • Rice cakes
  • Granola
  • Roasted chickpeas

woman packing toiletries and skincare products

While you may normally use a number of different beauty and skin care products, it is unlikely that you will be able to bring all of these with you when travelling.

Fortunately, there are several different items out there that have more than one purpose…

Here are a few fantastic multi-purpose beauty items to bring with you when on-the-go:

woman showing off her water bottle

No matter where you are going, you will likely not want to stop every couple of hours to purchase a new bottle of water, and, if you are travelling light, you will not be able to bring all of your water for the day with you.

However, water is absolutely key when it comes to keeping your skin looking bright and fresh.

Packing a refillable water bottle is a great way to get around this problem, as you will likely always have access to somewhere where you can fill this up.

Even if you are on a plane, ask the flight attendant to fill your bottle, rather than taking one of those tiny paper cups of water, so that you can keep your skin, and body, better hydrated.

Want to give your skin a boost of antioxidants at the same time?

Bring along a few tea bags as well, especially if you know that you will have the chance to fill your bottle with hot water.

Alternatively, add in a few slices of fruit to your bottle before leaving home, as this will then be able to infuse your water with extra nutrients each time you fill your bottle.

solid lip balm

Not only will you face restrictions when it comes to carrying liquids with you on a plane, but, no matter how you may be travelling, keeping liquids in your luggage only heightens the chance that something will leak, burst or spill.

Wondering what’s wrong with keeping all of your liquids in small containers in zip-lock plastic bags?

Absolutely nothing, but there is no reason to create that extra work for yourself, when you can simply opt for solid formulas of your favorite products instead.

For example, a cleansing balm is a great go-to product to replace your liquid makeup remover and cleanser, while a sunscreen stick is a handy alternative to a liquid sunscreen.
